Dieters may reach for seltzer after study finds carbonated water could help promote weight loss

TOKYO, Japan – Sparkling water enthusiasts might have a small edge in their weight-loss efforts, thanks to the tiny bubbles in their beloved beverage, according to recent research.

A study highlighted in the BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health suggests that carbonated water could potentially aid in weight loss by stimulating glucose uptake and metabolism within red blood cells. However, Akira Takahashi, a physician at Tesseikai Neurosurgical Hospital in Japan, stresses that while carbonation might speed up glucose absorption, it is not a magic bullet for shedding pounds.

The study emphasizes that the weight-loss benefits from carbon dioxide in sparkling water are marginal, cautioning against expecting significant results from it alone. Furthermore, fizzy drinks can lead to bloating or gas, which could exacerbate issues for individuals suffering from digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Interestingly, carbonated beverages, including seltzer, are sometimes used to curb appetite.

The study notes that the expansion of the stomach’s lower part, due to the release of gas from these drinks, can induce a sense of fullness, potentially diminishing hunger and slowing gastric movement.

However, it’s important to note that not all bubbly drinks are created equal. The study specifically focused on plain carbonated water, steering clear of diet sodas or those laden with artificial sweeteners, which have been associated with cardiovascular issues. Regular sodas, with about 140 calories per can, offer a different nutritional profile altogether.

Takahashi asserts that while carbonated water might play a supporting role in weight loss, it should be part of a broader strategy that includes healthy living practices. Relying on sparkling water alone for weight management is not advisable.

Ultimately, a balanced diet coupled with consistent physical activity is the cornerstone of effective and sustainable weight management, serving as the primary approach over any quick fixes that bubbly drinks might suggest.
