Dame Judi Dench says she can no longer go out alone because of vision loss

LONDON, United Kingdom – Dame Judi Dench recently opened up about her struggles with vision loss, revealing the profound effect it has had on her independence. Speaking on Trinny Woodall’s “Fearless” podcast, the 90-year-old actress candidly discussed the challenges posed by her condition.

Dench, celebrated for her illustrious career in film and theater, shared the impact of macular degeneration on her daily life. “I can’t go out alone anymore,” she revealed, adding a touch of humor to her serious admission by joking about pretending not to see. The actress emphasized that she now requires assistance to navigate safely.

Macular degeneration, noted by the Mayo Clinic as a leading cause of vision loss for those over 50, first became a public issue for Dench in 2012 when she disclosed her diagnosis. The condition, unfortunately, progresses rapidly, impacting the central field of vision.

During a 2021 event for the Vision Foundation in London, Dench spoke about adapting to her diminishing eyesight, specifically when it came to learning scripts. She explained that she had developed new methods, primarily relying on friends to repeatedly recite lines to her, helping her commit them to memory through sheer repetition.

The acclaimed actress humorously acknowledged her reliance on this technique, expressing a hopeful wish that audiences wouldn’t notice if her recitations weren’t perfect. Her determination to continue acting despite her visual limitations highlights her resilience and passion for the craft.

Her condition has also presented challenges due to her previous reliance on a photographic memory. In an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” in early 2023, Dench articulated the difficulty of memorizing lines without her once-reliable mental visual aid. “I need a machine that not only teaches me lines but visually recalls their placement on a page,” she explained.

Despite these hurdles, Dench remains active and committed to her work. Her openness about the condition illuminates the struggles faced by those dealing with similar challenges, offering both awareness and inspiration.

As she continues to adapt to her vision loss, Judi Dench’s resolve and humor remain an enduring hallmark of her character, both on and off-screen.
