Ski resort inferno leaves 66 people dead as some jump from 12 story hotel’s windows

KARTALKAYA, Turkey – A devastating fire claimed the lives of at least 66 people at a prominent ski resort hotel in Turkey, as guests faced the harrowing decision of jumping from windows to escape the flames.

The blaze erupted at the Grand Kartal Hotel, a 12-story wooden structure, early Wednesday morning. As vacationers filled the popular destination, enjoying the holiday season, the inferno trapped many within its walls. Of the 234 guests present at the time, initial fatality reports were grimly updated by the Turkish interior ministry over the following hours.

Authorities grappled for 12 hours to control the fire, with rescue efforts becoming increasingly desperate. In the aftermath, four individuals, including the hotel’s owner, were detained, as confirmed by the justice minister overseeing the inquiry.

“Our pain is great,” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya expressed in response to the tragedy. Videos circulating from the scene showed people using bed linens to climb from windows, seeking to reach safety.

Ski instructor Necmi Kepcetutan recounted his escape from the flames. Stationed on the building’s second floor when the fire ignited, he managed to evacuate through the ski room and went on to assist in rescue operations.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, but initial speculations by Bolu’s governor suggest the flames may have originated in the hotel’s restaurant, located on the fourth floor, before rapidly ascending to higher levels.

Challenges were compounded by the hotel’s remote location in Kartalkaya and severe winter conditions, delaying the arrival of fire services. It took emergency responders, numbering 267, over an hour to reach the site.

As authorities continue to search for answers, a significant concern is whether guests, including children, remained trapped at the height of the crisis. Although the hotel reportedly had two emergency exits, accounts from a hotel employee noted the successful evacuation of around 30-35 people.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc has appointed special prosecutors to delve into the incident, with the last safety inspection of the hotel having occurred in 2024. The tourism minister maintained that prior assessments raised no alarm regarding fire safety protocols.

However, the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) criticized the absence of an essential fire suppression system. Photos from the hotel’s website revealed a lack of the automatic sprinklers mandated since 2008, leading to questions about compliance with other safety measures.

This incident has sent ripples beyond Kartalkaya, a hub for skiers from both Istanbul and Ankara, just 105 miles away, marking the onset of a seasonal school break. Even neighboring accommodations were evacuated as a preventive measure.

While guests were eventually relocated to alternative lodging closer to Bolu’s center, the shockwaves of this disaster echo far. Sir Peter Westmacott, a former UK ambassador with past ties to the region, voiced his sorrow, underscoring the incident’s profound impact on those connected to Turkey.
