OMAHA, NE — A Nebraska couple’s attempt to earn some extra income by renting out their Omaha home on Airbnb took a disastrous turn when their house was allegedly turned into a methamphetamine lab by tenants. Daniel and Jocelyn Medrano now face extensive cleanup and repair costs after police intervened in a drug operation within their residence.
The Medranos had been using their home as a vacation rental for two years to help offset travel expenses. On a recent trip to Florida, they secured an 11-day booking that eventually covered their vacation costs. However, the positive experience quickly soured when the Omaha Police Department conducted a drug bust on their property.
Airbnb has since banned the guest linked to the criminal activity and pledged support to the hosts, highlighting their AirCover host damage protection program. Despite these assurances, the Medranos are grappling with a daunting estimate of over $26,000 for repairs, not including costs for replacing furniture and repainting walls.
Compounding their troubles, the Medrano’s home surveillance system caught the guest violating Airbnb policies by bringing additional people onto the property without authorization. The couple observed unusual activity, such as the movement of utility fans, pots, and bags containing a suspicious white powder.
As neighbors began to express concern over the suspicious activity, the Medranos alerted police, who set up their own surveillance. Lt. Steve Fornoff of the Omaha Police detailed the subsequent operation, which involved following the suspects’ vehicle and using K-9 units to confirm the presence of narcotics.
Authorities reported that over 100 pounds of meth had allegedly been produced in the home over just a few days. The police arrested three individuals on drug charges, marking the end of the illegal operation.
The aftermath left the Medranos with a contaminated home, including chemical residues and a pervasive smell of ammonia. The damages were extensive, with makeshift drug operation rooms set up in intimate spaces like the Medrano’s bedroom and their daughter’s room.
While the family works with Airbnb and local contractors to commence repairs, they are temporarily staying with friends. Airbnb’s AirCover policy offers them some financial relief by covering property damage and cleanup costs up to $3 million, but the emotional and logistical toll remains significant.
As the Medranos navigate the challenging path to restore their home, their story serves as a cautionary tale for other hosts relying on short-term rental platforms. The couple pledges to ensure the security of their property in the future, emphasizing vigilant monitoring and strict adherence to platform policies.
